Sun Valley
Idaho: Sun Valley Bike Tour
Map

DAY 5: We start out in the morning with a beautiful ride down along the River of No Return to Challis. After the climbs earlier in the week, today’s ride will feel easy. Keep your eyes peeled for wild mustangs and big-horned sheep. The downstream ride will allow plenty of time for more soaking in the natural pools at Challis Hot Springs, or to fish for trout in the pond at our B & B. 66 miles.

DAY 6: Our ride today takes us through the Big Lost River Valley to the Wild Horse Creek Ranch, where you’ll be treated to the ultimate in western hospitality. Along the way, we’ll pass by snow-capped Borah Peak, the highest mountain in the state. You’ll see few people and little traffic through this stunning terrain. 59 miles.

DAY 7: After a morning shuttle on a dirt road over Trail Creek Summit, we’ll start biking to the majestic 5-star Sun Valley Lodge. We’ll ride along the scenic Big Wood River. We’ll pass the internationally renowned Sun Valley ski resort and take in the glitz and glamour of Hailey, Idaho’s own “Little Hollywood.”

Hailey is perhaps best known for being the home of Demi Moore. However, you can stop at the Ernest Hemmingway Memorial that commemorates the fact that he was also once a vibrant part of this western community. We’ll say our good-byes tonight at our last dinner together. 48 miles.

DAY 8: Our tour ends this morning. You are free to take the hotel’s complimentary shuttle back to the airport at your leisure. Or you may want to stay and enjoy the beautiful Sun Valley Lodge for another day on your own. If you drove to the tour, WomanTours will drive you back to your car in Ketchum. 0 miles.

Known best as being the home of a ski resort for the rich and famous, Sun Valley happens to sit on the edge of the Sawtooth and Challis National Forests. This vast wilderness sets the stage for our bike tour through the beautiful, unworn rocky peaks of the Sawtooth Mountains and along the Salmon River. Known locally as the River of No Return, its fast moving water has created one of the deepest canyons in the world. Come join us as we explore this beautiful country.

DAY 1: We meet in the charming town of Ketchum, Idaho for a rental bike fitting at 3:00pm, an orientation meeting at 5:00pm, and then dinner at 6:30pm.

Ketchum began as a mining town in the late 1800s, became a sheepherders haven in the early 1900s and now calls itself a resort town for those heading into the Sawtooth Mountains. It’s the perfect jumping off point for our bike tour. If you arrive early, hike one of the nearby trails to explore the wildflower fields and small creeks that run throughout the valley.

DAY 2: We start our bicycling with a gradual ascent up Galena Summit at 8701’. We’ll catch our first view of the stunning Sawtooth mountain range and bike over the headwaters of the Salmon River, also known as the River of No Return. It’s the longest, un-dammed river in the lower 48 states.

DAY 3: Today’s ride takes us through the small town of Stanley and on to Stanley Lake. Stanley boasts to be one of the country’s most picturesque cities with populations of 100. Spectacular views of the mountains completely surround its downtown of dirt roads.

If yesterday’s climb wasn’t enough, then you can choose to ride the optional out-n-back climb to Banner Summit at 7200’. This gentle climb meanders through Challis National Forest. It’s so quiet that you’ll be able to hear the creeks running beside you as you bike. 35 or 58 miles.

DAY 4: We take a day off from our bicycles today to enjoy a beautiful raft trip down the Salmon River. Later, we’ll soak our bodies in the natural hot spring pools at the Sunbeam Dam. The 170 degree water mixes with the river for a delightful dip. 0 miles.
