Italy Amalfi
The Amalfi Coast of Italy
Map

DAY 6: We start our day with some climbing through thickly forested mountains into the heart of Cilento National Park. We’ll be rewarded with some impressive mountain views before descending into the fertile plain of Paestum, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. It features the remains of three major temples in the Doric style dating from the 7th Century BC. 37 miles.

DAY 7: After breakfast and a visit to the ancient temples, we shuttle today to Salerno, known as the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. This busy town is thought to be one of the sunniest in all of Italy. From Salerno, we take a boat to the town of Amalfi, so we can enjoy the view of the coast from the sea. Upon docking, you may then choose to bike the rest of the way to our hotel in Praiano. 0 or 12 miles.

DAY 8: We’ve saved the best ride for last. We’ll get an early start to bike to Positano, considered to be the most scenic village on the coast. From there, the coastline becomes wilder and more rugged. We’ll bike to the very tip of the peninsula and stop for lunch in Sorrento. We’ll be sure to make it back to our hotel in time to watch the sunset over the coast – for the perfect finale to our tour. 37 miles.

DAY 9: We’ll say our farewells after breakfast and then shuttle back to the Naples airport or train station, arriving by noon. Ciao! 0 miles.

We begin this newest Italian bike tour in the fascinating city of Naples. Then we bicycle the beautiful Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As anyone who has traveled with us to Italy knows, we work with the best guides and dine on the best food in the country, while enjoying some of the best scenery in the world.

DAY 1: We meet in Naples. Feel free to arrive anytime to our starting hotel. Naples was founded by the Greeks and named Neapolis – “new city” – more than 2800 years ago. If you arrive early enough, take the time to explore some of the city’s beautiful piazzas, churches and museums. Or sit and enjoy a slice of pizza, which originated here. 0 miles.

DAY 2: We’ll start our day with a gentle hike to the Mount Vesuvius volcano. We’ll visit the archaeological site of Herculaneum, which together with Pompeii was destroyed by the volcano’s eruption in 79 AD.

Then we’ll shuttle to the medieval town of Maratea, known as the city of 44 churches. It sits nestled against the rocky slopes of the Lucania Apennine Mountains, overlooking the clear blue Gulf of Policastro. We’ll have our rental bike fitting there and then our first dinner together. 0 miles.

DAY 3: We start our bicycling along the coast with beautiful views of the gulf. Then we head inland around the limestone Mount Bulgheria and through several small villages to the entrance of Mingardo Canyon. Then it’s downhill to our overnight in Palinuro, known as the jewel of the Cilento Coast. It’s surrounded by chalk cliffs full of sea caves begging to be explored. 37 miles.

DAY 4: After breakfast, we’ll take a boat ride to check out some of the caves up close. Wear your swimsuit for a dip in the Mediterranean Sea. In the afternoon, we’ll bike to a farm near Ascea where we’ll overnight for the next two nights. We’ll have time to learn all about its production of olive oil and wine. 25 miles.

DAY 5: Our loop ride today takes us through Cilento National Park. We’ll alternate between beautiful views of low seaside and high medieval villages. We’ll stop for a cappuccino on the beach in the fishing community of Acciaroli, once well loved by Ernest Hemmingway. 49 miles.
