We’ve combined two in our series of Great Lakes tours to create this Around Lakes Ontario and Erie epic adventure. They may be the two smallest great lakes, but they look like oceans and have shores surrounded by vast gently rolling and rural farmland. Their banks are also home to one of Canada’s most fascinating cities – Toronto, and the river between them has one of the wonders of the world - Niagara Falls. If you are looking for an unforgettable getaway this summer, join us!
DAY 1: We meet just outside of Rochester, NY, home to worldwide WomanTours headquarters. We’ll start our tour at 2:00pm with an orientation, followed by a bike prep and then dinner together. If you arrive early, feel free to stop by our office. We always love visitors. 0 miles.
DAY 2-12: We’ll run this tour as we do our cross-country tours. After a light, nutritionally balanced buffet breakfast, we’ll pack our bike bags with snacks, and be on our way at our own pace.
We’ll ride out of the hotel on a short paved bike trail and then we’re quickly at the shores of Lake Ontario. The landscape becomes gently rolling and flat farmland full of apple orchards and cow pastures.
We’ll support this tour with our Subaru SAG vehicle that holds water, snacks, tire repair tools and a first aid kit. Even if you don’t need anything, you can stop to chat and talk about the wonderful tailwind or the panoramic view.
Lunch is on your own during the day if you want something heartier than the snacks out of our SAG vehicle. We encourage you to stop and get a taste of the local fare and gossip.
Once at our hotel, you’ll find your luggage, (delivered earlier by the WomanTours van and trailer,) and check-in to your room. We rotate roommates every night, unless you’ve requested a specific roommate or to upgrade to a single room. There will be time to shower before dinner and perhaps take a dip in the hotel pool.
Most of our motels will be AAA-rated or better, and most of us will be in double occupancy rooms. If anyone has experienced bike problems during the day, we’ll use the time before dinner to work with the guide to fix it.
Then we’ll eat dinner outside together, scrumptiously prepared for us by our traveling chef. She’ll make several different dishes so everyone is sure to find something she loves. We serve it family-style, and there’s always plenty for everyone. After dinner, the guide holds a map meeting to discuss the highlights of the day and to go over the details of the next day’s route.
We’ll have a layover day in Toronto, Canada to give our bodies a chance to recover. We’ll also have time to explore this fascinating city, which proudly proclaims itself to be the most diverse and safest in the world.
We end our trek around Lake Ontario with a short ride on the Erie Canalway Trail into Rochester, NY. With any luck, the prominent west wind will provide us with a wonderful tailwind back to our starting hotel. After enjoying a picnic lunch, we’ll say good-bye to the women doing only the first lake. 52 miles average per day.
DAY 13: WomanTours will provide a complimentary shuttle from Rochester to Cleveland for the start of the trek around Lake Erie. If you’ve come by car, you can make the 5-hour drive yourself and leave your vehicle at our hotel in Cleveland. Our hotel is within walking distance of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the International Women’s Air & Space Museum and the Great Lakes Science Center. 0 miles.
DAY 14: You’ll have time to further explore Cleveland this morning before we welcome the women arriving for the trip around Lake Erie at a 2:00pm orientation and then dinner together. 0 miles.
DAY 15-24: We’ll cycle east out of the city on the Cleveland Lakefront Bikeway. Once out of town, the landscape will become gently rolling and flat, as we ride by farmland, vineyards and orchards.
We’ll pass through Ohio to Pennsylvania to New York and then have a layover day in Buffalo, NY to give our bodies a chance to recover. If you didn’t have time to see everything on your first pass through Niagara Falls, you can do the optional 46-mile bike path ride to the Falls today. Hike down into the gorge, take the jet boat tour through the rapids, or visit the Cave of the Winds to walk underneath the falls and feel their immense power. For a more relaxing day, stay in Buffalo and view the world renown Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s collection of modern and contemporary art. Lunch and dinner are on your own today.
After the layover day, we’ll cross the Peace Bridge into Canada and start our ride along the northern shore of Lake Erie on the 16-mile Friendship Trail. Then it’s back on the road through rural Ontario. 51 miles average per day.
DAY 25: We’ll cross back into the USA by taking two ferries and passing through Pelee Island. Known as the southernmost community in Canada, Pelee Island is also part of a major migratory bird and butterfly route. The island’s Ecological Trail System provides access to the beaches, forests, sand dunes, and marshes found nowhere else in Canada. You can cycle past a lighthouse, winery and several nature preserves on your way across this bucolic island. 17 miles.
DAY 26: Our last day of cycling takes us back to our starting hotel in Cleveland along the beautiful Lakefront Bikeway. We’ll end our tour with a celebratory dinner. 52 miles.
DAY 27: We will offer a complimentary shuttle to the Cleveland airport or train station arriving by 9:00am. 0 miles.
REGISTRATION DETAILS: To sign up for this combined tour, we require a $400 deposit. The balance of the tour cost is due 75 days prior to the tour start. We require this payment by check.
